Between 1818 and 1899 48 lighthouses were built on the Adriatic, so that they help navigation and ensure the naval supremacy of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Working as a lighthouse-keeper meant a safe job and great determination at the same time, as people working out there, exposed to loneliness, the elements of nature and the hard, strictly regulated work could hardly rely on anyone but themselves and their closest family staying with them. In 1986 the light of even the last Adriatic lighthouse was automated, lighthouse-keepers however still live there, guard the lighthouses and do smaller maintenance jobs. The crew of this documentary visited three lighthouses to find out how lighthouse-keepers live today: the last „family team" and the men working on their own in shifts.
